Dear Dr. Cherrye,

It has been a rough school year for my children who were both bullied at different times of the school year. It was a very sad, frustrating and busy school year as I tried to support them while working closely with school officials as you’ve suggested. Now that the school year has ended, what ideas do you have during the summer break to help mend my children back to normalcy? I feel like their minds have been hijacked by the school bullies.

As I attempt to answer your question, my heart is breaking. Dealing with issues of bullying with one child is difficult enough, but for two it just seems ridiculously unfair.

To help your children unwind and drift away from all of the turmoil they’ve been through this year, please be sure to continue building their self-esteem. This term is age-old, so I know that you are really looking for various, but specific ways to do this, so here goes.

  1. Talk to your children a lot about their self-worth. They need to hear how important they are to you (their parents), extended family, household pets, close friends, church members, society in general and etc.
  2. Utilize and bring in their talents. Whatever it is that they’re good at beyond their normal school elective activities, have them exercise their extended talents (those they barely did during the school year).
  3. Play soothing, classical music in your home this summer.
  4. If no allergies, burn eucalyptus or your family’s favorite essentials oils.
  5. Go to the beach and spend quality time near the water.
  6. Take small trips to places they’ll enjoy and talk along the way (Buc-ee’s is a great place to pause grab a snack, and talk).
  7. Read uplifting books (story books, novels, spiritual).
  8. Find writing journals they can use to express themselves.
  9. Enjoy Summer family nights (take turns hosting it).
  10. If you believe in God, select scriptures on the topics of faith, love and charity.
  11. Find charitable activities/jobs they can take part in such as helping an elderly person, and the like. This will encourage compassion.
  12. Take walks around your favorite park and talk, talk, talk.
  13. Attend parties that you’re invited to and find ways to talk about things that occurred while there. Dissect behaviors (good and bad).
  14. Find relatable movies that lend toward feelings/emotions that you can discuss as a family. Dissect scenes.
  15. Find a Park that hosts fun activities such as dancing, aerobics, art and more (most are free if you purchase your supplies).
  16. Hug and kiss your children a lot this summer reminding them how special they are to you and the entire family.

Finally, assure your children that you’ll continue to intervene and advocate for their rights to attend a safe, free-from-bullying upcoming school year, and that they are not the problem – the bully is!

    Hi Ms. Cherrye; I admire your mission to assist in help prevent and/or defend from bullying. I was bullied in elementary school and it followed to high school in a sublet way. I think watching a positive kid movie that shows how kids overcome bullying and even enrolling in karate or similar programs may help. Even a possible camp for helping kids may help.

      I appreciate your admiration of my work. You are one of my greatest cheerleaders. I’m very sorry to learn that you were once bullied in elementary school. Your admission proves that even years later bullying affects children.
      Thank you very much for adding your ideals of what this parent and others can do to assist their children with help and hope. I especially love your idea of karate. Discipline and self-confidence is a great way to strengthen the minds of our kiddos.
